about

Commemoration of the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation. Whether you celebrate or criticize the Reformation, you will appreciate the way in which this song presents this world-changing, historical event.

lyrics

Hook:
The nail heard around the world
Controversy
Sparking a movement against the corrupt clergy
The word of God now in the hands of common men
An intermingling of slavery and freedom for the broken

Verse one:
1517, a year so pivotal
It's spiritual
Implications far from minimal
A critical,
Moment that went down in history
The 95 Theses nailed to a door in Germany
God in His sovereignty
Would raise up a man to be
A spark for a needed Reformation that our world would see
And even though it wasnt his original intention
His excommunication would force him into action
Martin Luther standing at the Diet of Worms
Told to recant all his writtings that opposed those of Rome
But Luther stood firm
Said I cannot recant
his conscience captivated by the Scriptures he affirmed
Romans 1:17 woke his heart up from a nap
And because of that, from his writings we can learn
But don’t get it twisted he also had blindspots
Just a crooked stick makin straight lines, word to Prop

Verse two:
Steppin next up to bat
Was the Frenchman with tact
A second generation reformer to be exact
The method man of a movement’s doctrinal legacy
Its plain to see,
The man I’m referring to is Johnny C.
Calvin the professor greatly influenced the
Puritans who eventually set out to sea
Landed in a land that was already owned
Yet they made it their own
And would justify slavery
The greatest blind spot of the American Church
Puritan, racist folk? Yeah that aint no joke.
Yet in spite of their crookedness, God would still use these men
Whitefield and Edwards would spark The Great Awakening
Looking at today
There’s still reform to be done
Racial division is one
It's really got us undone
But in God’s grace, the spirit of the Reformation
Has filled many communities with passion to make changes.
